Chapter 11

Every cell in my body was on red alert, but I kept my cool.

The two women looked the same as they had the last time they’d been in my store. An encounter that had devolved into a full-on fist-and-claw fight after Viking Lavigne shifted into a huge wolf-woman humanoid, and ended up with Artemis brewing a memory potion to knock them out and make them forget everything they’d seen in town.

I’d heaved them both into the back of my car, driven them out to the woods, and dumped them by the side of the road.

It hadn’t been my most glamorous moment, but it was the only way to get them away from the store, away from Wormwood, and away from Chanterelle.

But now they were back like nothing had happened.

I watched them as they moved away from the door. It was clear Artemis’ memory wipe potion had done its job at least.

They only gave me a cursory glance like they’d never seen me before.

I remembered their disdain from the last time.

They lingered near a shelf and looked around the shop. Viking Lavigne bent her blonde, braided head to whisper in her girlfriend’s deer-like ear.

The antlered woman nodded and searched in her pocket.

I knew exactly what they were up to because it was the same thing they’d done the first time they’d come here.

They’d crafted tracking sigils on pieces of paper and planted them all over the store. I’d found them slipped between the pages of books, pushed under the stands of action figures, and wedged into the cracks of the shelves. Artemis had said that each sigil acted like a sensor, and they would send out a magical alert if there were any high levels of magical activity nearby. It was basically like planting a bug.

In my fucking shop, goddammit.

And now they were back, and from the way they started prowling around the edge of the shop floor and examining the bookcases, it looked like they were following the exact same plan as before.

It would be kind of funny if they weren’t so dangerous.

I hurried out from behind the counter just in time to see Viking Lavigne push something between the spines of Birds of Prey and Batman: City of Madness.

The statuesque warrior woman gave me an irritated glance from her icy-blue eyes and moved away from the bookshelves. She was wearing the same black cropped vest, tight black leather pants, and chunky black boots as before. Her washboard abs were just as defined, and her tits were just as perfect as I remembered.

She was the perfect mixture of sex and danger.

“Can I help you ladies with anything?” I asked in my cheeriest voice.

“No,” Viking Lavigne grunted.

She might be gorgeous, but as soon as she opened her mouth, all potential attraction vanished.

I slid my fingers between the spines of the comic books, felt around, and pulled out a small piece of cardstock. At first glance, it looked like a regular business card advertising a cleaning service.

It was covered in pink soap bubbles, and the curly white font on the front read: GLADYS’ CLEANING SERVICE.
